Claw & Canvas

Designing a luxury art store from the ground up, enhancing navigation and user engagement through research-led UX.

Problem

The project involved designing a Shopify store from scratch for a high-end brand selling animal-themed canvas prints and artwork. While the overall vision was clear, user preference testing revealed a key issue - navigation within collection pages wasn’t as intuitive as it could be.

Users found it difficult to browse categories efficiently, which risked hindering conversions.

Process

As the lead UX designer, I took a research-led approach to inform the store’s structure and layout.

I conducted user preference testing to compare different designs, ensuring the final experience aligned with shopper expectations. The insights from this testing shaped the core navigation strategy.

Iterations

Based on our findings, I introduced a new navigation element on collection pages: a set of clickable images with text at the top of the page. This provided a clear and visually engaging way for users to explore different product categories without unnecessary friction.

The design was refined through feedback loops, ensuring usability and consistency with the brand’s aesthetic.

Final Design

The final Shopify store combined a premium look and feel with a user-friendly shopping experience. The improved collection navigation created a more intuitive browsing journey, helping customers find the right artwork faster.

I collaborated with freelance developers to bring the design to life, ensuring seamless implementation.

Impact

The new navigation structure directly addressed user pain points uncovered in testing, improving the clarity and accessibility of the store’s collection pages.

This change was part of a broader, research-driven design process aimed at maximising engagement and conversions for the brand.
