Parkinson’s UK - Local Support Tool

Redesigning a local support tool, making it easier for people with Parkinson’s to find essential services and activities.

Problem

Parkinson’s UK provides vital local support, but their existing tool for finding activities and services was unintuitive and difficult to navigate. The side-scrolling interface made browsing cumbersome, and key information wasn’t presented in a clear, engaging way.

The challenge was to rethink the tool’s design to make it easier for users, many of whom may have accessibility needs, to quickly find relevant support in their area.

Process

Before leaving Parkinson’s UK, I led the concept and design of a new Local Support Tool, drawing inspiration from intuitive location-based platforms like Airbnb. The goal was to create a visually engaging and easy-to-use experience, replacing the side-scrolling navigation with a more structured layout.

Quick filters and colourful icons were introduced to categorise activities at a glance, improving usability. A reimagined card-based layout ensured that each support listing was clear, scannable, and visually distinct.

Iterations

The redesign focused on simplifying the browsing experience while making the tool feel more approachable and engaging. I worked closely with internal stakeholders to refine the structure, ensuring it met both organisational needs and best UX practices.

While formal user testing wasn’t conducted during my involvement, the concept was built with accessibility and ease of use in mind. Any refinements post-launch would have been informed by real-world user feedback.

Final Design

The new design transformed the Local Support Tool into a more accessible and engaging resource. The introduction of quick filters and iconography helped users immediately identify relevant activities, while the refreshed layout improved clarity.

The concept has since been fully developed, maintaining the core principles of the original design direction I established.

Impact

The redesign provided a more intuitive and visually appealing way for people with Parkinson’s to find local support, removing previous navigation barriers.

By prioritising usability and clarity, the tool became a more effective resource for users looking for essential services and activities.
